Aaron Rai Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Play-Off Battle Against Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer displayed exceptional composure to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, beating his compatriot in a dramatic playoff after a rollercoaster last day of play.
Rai nailed a decisive birdie putt from just over eight feet to seal the victory, echoing his only previous tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff victory against Fleetwood.
Sunday's Play Excitement
The champion started the last day with a one-shot lead over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under closing round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
Fleetwood moved one shot clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the sixteenth, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a 10-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the final hole.
Playoff Decider
This set up a playoff at Yas Links where Rai triumphed to take the title and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even better individual. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” stated Rai, the current world No 30. “You’re so focused on your game and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to put into words at the present how it feels. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”
Other Contenders
The Northern Irish star left himself a bit too far to make up, coming up one shot short in a tie for third with the Dane, after a spectacular 10-under final round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s best-ever score on the European Tour, including eight birdie putts and an eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdie putts of his as well, but his chances of topping the standings were hit by a bogey on the twelfth. English golfer Mansell hit an excellent final-round 63 to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australian Daniel Hillier.
