No less than 64 Dead in Rio's Biggest Law Enforcement Operation on Organized Crime
A minimum of 64 civilians died in a security raid cracking down on the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the area's past.
Four police officers were among those killed during the police action in the Alemão and Penha districts, local authorities said. In excess of 80 people were detained.
Intense confrontations erupted when around 2,500 police forces entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The criminal organization responded with armed resistance, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, police representatives confirmed.
The International human rights organization expressed being "shocked" by the law enforcement raid, urging "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Operation Impact
The informal settlements close to the city's international airport is seen as the main base of among the nation's strongest illegal networks.
Government representatives said at least 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Numerous individuals were wounded, including non-combatants affected by the violence.
Community Response
Locals have compared the mountainous region - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the mission commenced.
Access ways continue shut across the area.
Criminal Expansion
The Comando Vermelho organization has been growing their influence in the area, growing illegal substance trade paths and dominance over the slum communities.
Local law enforcement stated more than 200kg (441lb) of drugs were confiscated in the mission, together with dozens of firearms.

The joint operation by civil and military police comes after a year-long investigation.
Many of the individuals are considered affiliates of a group from the northern region who are presently concealed in Rio de Janeiro.
